Is it intentional that Raphael;s comments are in all caps? (as opposed to your miniscules?). I offer you my support Dr. Cargill. I don’t even know the half of the story, but it is just wrong on so many levels. When I studied the Essenes in the context of Josephus, I was made aware of Norman Golb’s theory, and I think that scholars will always respect a scholar who produces arguments with the utmost professionalism and sincerity. But I am just appalled at some of the things that Raphael has said and done, there is no place for ad hominem attacks.

I find the irony is that as you, Jim, and others want to make blogging a more utilized and recognized form of scholarly interaction (which I fully support), we can see some the trouble that crop up with aliases, and ridiculous and outlandish sloganeering.

I must say that this is simply interesting, sorry you had to go through it, but I think you got a shot at forensic files!

I got a rather curt email from LS, wondering who I was, and why posted about him on my blog, now I wonder if it was really him, and if it was him, I van understand his curtness, the guy probably loathes the Internet!

Just the way he goes about it seems so over the top. Ironically enough, I had a lecture on Golb’s theory the week of Raphael’s arrest which may be why I don’t really symaphise with it being forcefully suppressed.

ari, i considered that, but anyone with a ph.d. and a j.d., who is smart enough to manage an entire campaign of deception and defamation this elaborate for this many years at the extent to which he did has to have either some brains or some help. is he angry? sure. he admits as much. is he obsessive? i’ll say sure, but then that’s true for a lot of scholars (including this one. no one gets through a ph.d. without some level of obsession ;-). but is he insane? i’ll say no. that doesn’t give him enough credit. he’s quite aware of precisely what he’s doing and why he’s doing it.
