UCLA's Dr. Peter Lanfer and Sarah Drew Lanfer, who plays Dr. April Kepner on ABC's Grey's Anatomy

(It’s about time someone reported this story ‘exclusively’ so we can publicly congratulate you!! ;-)

Congratulations are in order to my colleague, UCLA prof (and frequently visiting Dartmouth prof) Dr. Peter Lanfer, and his wife, Grey’s Anatomy star Sarah Drew Lanfer, on the announcement of their coming child. Peter is a scholar specializing in Second Temple Judaism at UCLA, and Sarah plays Dr. April Kepner on the hit ABC show.  (I’d love to see how that virginity theme is going to play out now…)

The People article reveals:

The actress, 30, is due in January, her rep tells PEOPLE exclusively. This will be the first child for Drew and husband Peter Lanfer.

Allow me to add my personal congratulations on your getting knocked up. You two are shining examples of class, professionalism, kindness, humility, and downright hilarity. Roslyn and I enjoy the time we spend with you, and you will make excellent parents. I pray that your growing family is always filled with laughter and happiness. And we look forward to seeing your round belly at SBL. (That goes for you too, Sarah. ;-)

ישא יהוה פניו אליך וישם לך שלום

Congratulations again!

southern christianity, nascar, product placement, and a smokin’ hot wife

if this is not the epitome of selling out christianity for product profitability and popularity, then i don’t know what is.

the most clever argument thus far against a historical worldwide flood and noah’s ark

i especially enjoyed the rhetorical litany of animals supposedly on the ark, the math on the volume of water necessary (but not available) to flood the earth, the discussion of drones and parasites, their solution for dealing with predatory consumption vs. herbivores, the treatment of animal waste, and the discursus on ‘speciation’ and how creationists must allow for speciation to have occurred for a very short period shortly after the flood, but not in perpetuity and not if that same process is called ‘evolution by natural selection.’

jesus appears in a walmart receipt

Jesus in a Wal-Mart receipt

Jesus in a Wal-Mart receipt

A Christian couple in Anderson County, SC discovered an image they believe to be Jesus on a WalMart receipt (of course that’s where they were.) But some are questioning whether the image is Jesus or someone else. (Experts are doing comparisons with some early self-portraits and photographs of Jesus to determine for certain.)

There is one easy way to determine whether the pic is of Jesus or not: is the man in the picture a masculine looking man, or just some “chickified church boy in a sweater vest“? @PastorMark #ManlyMen

The pic does looks pretty thuggish and hard core. Maybe @PastorMark can use him as a greeter at Mars Hill (it is a WalMart receipt after all…).

Find X - Simplicity

Just because it’s simple, clever, or rhymes, doesn’t necessarily make it correct.

don miller on real masculinity: tony dungy

I like Don Miller. Always have. I’ve read all his books, and I like his conversant style.

So when Don Miller weighed in to the recent “real masculinity” debate (background: here and here and here), he did so with his typical class and style.

Yesterday, I held up Michael Irvin as an example of a Christian advocate in the battle against homophobia. Today, Mr. Miller holds up perhaps the preeminent example of masculinity, leadership, class, and style in the NFL, former Colts Head coach Tony Dungy.

Miller kept it short and simple, without naming names:

In an age where a few celebrity pastors are projecting an immature masculine image, a guy like Tony Dungy reminds us of what a good man looks like. He looks like a sober, mature, thoughtful, strong, disciplined person who brings peace into chaos. It would be easy for some of us guys to get led astray by false teachers who use shame, guilt and ridicule to make themselves feel more manly, but these guys are just covering up their own insecurities. Here’s Coach Dungy talking like a man.

Well said sir, well said. To watch the Dungy video and hear what Coach Dungy had to say, click here.

P.S.: Scholars should also take note of Mr. Miller’s approach to blogging: “Before it becomes a book, it all gets tested here. Forgive the rough patches. Here is the writing in process.” Blogs are the new best places to get free, instant peer-review feedback from a diversity of opinions.

…but, the LAPD did find something during a traffic stop, and methinks it was a tad bit over an ounce:

Over a ton of marijuana has been found during a mid-city Los Angeles traffic stop.

A Torrance police officer stopped the car on July 8 and a drug-sniffing dog alerted the officer that there were drugs in the vehicle.

A Torrance police report released Wednesday says a search discovered more than 2,600 pounds of marijuana.

The investigation led to eight arrests.

The department hasn’t disclosed the reason for the traffic stop some 15 miles from Torrance.

I haven’t left yet, so don’t point the finger at me.
