Excellent Rebuttal to Apologetic “Objective Morality” Claims invoking Hitler by NonStampCollector

My colleague, NonStampCollector (@nonstampNSC; YouTube), has posted an excellent new video that offers a refutation to a common argument made by some theistic apologists that claims that morality must ultimately be objective (requiring therefore an objective moral lawgiver = God) using a hypothetical situation positing that Hitler actually won WWII, and that because of his propaganda machine, anyone who thought ill of his extermination of the Jews would be an outcast in a minority of ethical thinkers, even though they were still correct in condemning the Holocaust.

NonStampCollecter debunks this logic in a way that only NSC can. Check it out.

  1. Yes, but look what WE did. We bombed an entire country to smithereens killing thousands of innocent children. We took away all their defenses and let the wolves in. We are still in some kind of denial and feel no shame.

  2. I must say that I totally enjoyed NSC’s wit and erudition. However, as with most 20th – 21st century people, he makes the mistake in assuming that a theistic person has to be some flavour of Abrahamic (or possibly involved with the synthetic 20th century “religion” of wicca (I’m not really sure what to call it any more except among BTW groups). If you want to know more about this, I will be happy to correspond. Among people who worship a pantheon, the God or Goddess of War does not order the people into battle per se — and definitely doesn’t bother with innocent civilians. There are always cases of being in the wrong place at the wrong time — and rapine when a city falls was usual. But a deity never ordered it. The army is responsible — as it should be. No one can say, “Mars made me do it.” This deity is called upon to help the soldiers keep their courage, to be strong. It is the tribe which is going to war — not the deities of the tribe.

  3. > …morality must ultimately be objective (requiring therefore an objective moral lawgiver = God)…

If morality was not be objective, noone would follow its norms. Relative morality is false morality because it aims at self survival. But reason for the objectivity of morality is not objective moral lawgiver but objective reality itself. Freedom is a propery of objective reality and this same freedom is the necessary and sufficient for morality. Here is brief explanation of this issue – http://ethical-liberty.com/freedom-ethics.htm
