the greatest orchestral performance of all time

…is turned in by The Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain.

I love Sergio Leone, and love Clint Eastwood, but also love Lee Van Cleef and Eli Wallach.

Excellent choice by the Ukulele Orchestra and well performed.

this makes me smile: ted williams one year later

As a Red Sox fan, any story about the greatest hitter of all time catches my eye.

But this Ted Williams, and his story about a second chance at life, makes me smile. I mean BIG smile.

Entertainment Tonight features a story about a formerly homeless crack addict, who was given (and who has accepted) a second chance at life.

Stories of redemption always make me smile that smile you smile when you remember that there are still people in the world trying to make it a better place, and trying to serve those in need without demanding something in return.

I wish Mr. Williams a healthy, happy, and sober life, and may he continue to stay near to the people that have made his life so enjoyable.

Introducing MacLaren Grey Cargill

Roslyn and I are proud to announce the birth of our son, MacLaren Grey Cargill, born Aug. 7, 2011 at 10:05 PM. He weighed 7 lbs. 12 oz. and was 20.5 in. long. Roslyn delivered after 34 hours at the Kaiser Permanente hospital in Fresno, CA.

(It’s about time someone reported this story ‘exclusively’ so we can publicly congratulate you!! ;-)

Congratulations are in order to my colleague, UCLA prof (and frequently visiting Dartmouth prof) Dr. Peter Lanfer, and his wife, Grey’s Anatomy star Sarah Drew Lanfer, on the announcement of their coming child. Peter is a scholar specializing in Second Temple Judaism at UCLA, and Sarah plays Dr. April Kepner on the hit ABC show.  (I’d love to see how that virginity theme is going to play out now…)

The People article reveals:

The actress, 30, is due in January, her rep tells PEOPLE exclusively. This will be the first child for Drew and husband Peter Lanfer.

Allow me to add my personal congratulations on your getting knocked up. You two are shining examples of class, professionalism, kindness, humility, and downright hilarity. Roslyn and I enjoy the time we spend with you, and you will make excellent parents. I pray that your growing family is always filled with laughter and happiness. And we look forward to seeing your round belly at SBL. (That goes for you too, Sarah. ;-)

ישא יהוה פניו אליך וישם לך שלום

Congratulations again!

thank you to rachel west and nuclear knitting!!

Nuclear Knitting

Nuclear Knitting by Rachel West

I would like to send out my utmost gratitude and a thousand thank yous to Rachel West, who has hand knitted the softest, most perfect baby blanket I’ve ever touched. It is amazing!

The blanket is grey (which is MacLaren’s middle name), with a deep blue border. There is a pic of it here. The thing I can’t get over is how incredibly soft it is – like no other knitted blanket I’ve ever touched. When Roslyn first handed it to me and said, “Feel this,” I responded, “There is no way this is hand-knitted.” Yet, sure enough, it is.

MacLaren hasn’t arrived yet, so I can’t post pix of him in it. However, when he arrives, I’ll be sure to post pix of him in his new blankey.

If you would like to get your hands on similar hand-knitted goods, I encourage you to check out Rachel’s Nuclear Knitting website and ‘like’ the Nuclear Knitting Facebook page.

Thank you again, Rachel. It’s absolutely adorable!!

UPDATE: Samuel L. Jackson reads ‘Go the F**k to Sleep’

Go the F**k to Sleep by Adam Mansbach (Author) and Ricardo Cortes (Illustrator)

"Go the F**k to Sleep" by Adam Mansbach (Author) and Ricardo Cortes (Illustrator)

I reported on this last month, but it wasn’t perfect enough.

Samuel L. Jackson has been hired to read the audio version of the new comedic children’s book, ‘Go the F**k to Sleep.

Obligatory caution: language.

From my earlier post:

Go the F**k to Sleep is a children’s bedtime book for adults by Adam Mansbach (Author) and Ricardo Cortes (Illustrator).

I guarantee that I’ll get a copy because I love biting humor, and because every honest parent will admit that he or she has thought this expression in his/her mind (if not muttered it under their breath) at some point during child rearing.

I’m sorry, but this is funny. So criticize it in public if you want, and deny you’ve ever read/listened to it at church, but if you’re a parent, at least admit to yourself that you’ve been there (or at least neat to there) at least once, and that this is actually captures some of the frustration in a rather funny way.

UPDATE: Werner Herzog reads the book at the NY Public Library.

fan on field FAIL. (security tackle WIN!)

I remember watching this game yesterday and noting they stopped for a second. TV crews no longer show fans running around on the field so as not to encourage more of the bad behavior.

Watch the security guard on this video. made my day!

(if only the Red Sox could hit like that this year…)

Robert Cargill and Roslyn Bennett, just after being pronounced man and wife.

one year ago today we were married. it’s been the best year of my life, and i love you more every day. i have always wanted a partner i could love and trust, one with whom i could see eye-to-eye, fight battles, advocate for justice, challenge the status quo, explore new places and ideas, and raise a family. you have been a wonderful friend (to both me and tali), confidant, caretaker, ally, lover, chef, and source of strength, laughter, and love. i am immensely excited about our coming son, and look forward to our next year together as a growing family.

more every day…

i love you.

cargill 2.0 beta (codenamed: “MacLaren Cargill”) is a boy

Cargill 2.0 Beta is just about feature complete. We have even determined an operating codename: MacLaren. (We’re still working on a middle name. We have an excellent candidate, but we are open to suggestions.)

We also learned today that it’s a boy! (as scientifically documented and peer-reviewed below).

MacLaren Cargill

A pensive MacLaren Cargill rests chin on fist and ponders the importance of 2 Samuel 7 to Second Temple period Jewish concepts of messianism.

MacLaren Cargill

MacLaren Cargill covers his eyes at the sight of a nurse's Yankees hat. Go Sox!

MacLaren Cargill

MacLaren Cargill responding to the question: How many books are in the Pentateuch?

MacLaren Cargill

MacLaren Cargill has a big head like his father. Head! Pants! Now!

MacLaren Cargill

Yep, it's a boy. Atten-tion!

MacLaren Cargill

Peer-review confirmation. Boy.
