Happy 4th Anniversary Roslyn

Roslyn,

We’ve been married 4 years, and it was beautiful from the beginning.

Throw Ros in the water

It’s been a tough year – the toughest yet…

…and yet it was a beautiful mess of babies and growth that I wouldn’t want to share with anyone else.

ros,

one year ago today we were married. it’s been the best year of my life, and i love you more every day. i have always wanted a partner i could love and trust, one with whom i could see eye-to-eye, fight battles, advocate for justice, challenge the status quo, explore new places and ideas, and raise a family. you have been a wonderful friend (to both me and tali), confidant, caretaker, ally, lover, chef, and source of strength, laughter, and love. i am immensely excited about our coming son, and look forward to our next year together as a growing family.

more every day…

i love you.

happy 62nd anniversary (kinda) dead sea scrolls

Qumran Inkwell Party Hat

A Qumran inkwell celebrates the 62nd anniversary of the discovery of the Dead Sea Scrolls. (I chose the inkwell because, you know, inkwells were discovered at Qumran ;-).

Ferrell Jenkins has an excellent summary of the discovery of the Dead Sea Scrolls over at his Travel Blog. The “discoveries” were made beginning 62 years ago this week, and scholars have been fighting ever since. Of course, Qumran had a long history of visitors well before the discovery of the scrolls, but it was the scrolls that have been all the rage ever since.

I’ve been doing my part to honor the scrolls over the past couple of years. I gave the site of Qumran a makeover a few years back, wrote a book about them, and hosted a documentary on the writing of the scrolls last year, which you can watch here.

So happy anniversary to the discovery of the Dead Sea Scrolls. You have brought me nothing but pain suffering headaches Charles Gadda court appearances trials tribulations joy ever since I’ve known you. :)

i still remember

i still remember the day the challenger exploded, jan. 28, 1986. I was in the 7th grade. my math teacher, mr. aldrich’s father, worked in the space industry. it was 8:30 in the morning in california.

it still makes me cry every time i watch it.

35 years ago and the legend lives on (from the chippewa on down…)

One of the greatest memorial ballads ever written preserves the legend of the Edmund Fitzgerald. 35 years ago Wednesday, the boat about which Gordon Lightfoot sang  sank in Lake Superior, November 10, 1975. Lightfoot’s song, The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald (lyrics), was a staple around my house. So to those sailors who lost their lives 35 years ago, including David E. Weiss of my current home, Agoura, California, rest in peace.

Read Jim Kavanaugh’s excellent article at CNN.com.

Listen to radio chatter from the night of the wreck (from the Great Lakes Shipwreck Museum).
